Detail: Mt. Bagana, Bougainville Island, Papua...Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): Activity at the volcano continues. A volcanic ash plume was observed at 6,000 ft (1.8 km) altitude and extending 15 nautical miles to the S and W.
White Island (New Zealand): Tremor remains unstable. After a period of low intensity, strong tremor has reappeared today, reflecting internal fluid movements and degassing.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Another, but weaker episode of strong volcanic tremor and near-continuous emissions occurred yesterday at 15:50 (local time), creating a plume of steam, gas and ash rising 900 m and drifting NE. After a few hours, activity decreased again to individual small explosions at a rate of about 1 per hour, such as one captured on the webcam a few minutes ago.

Telica (Nicaragua): The earthquake swarm continues with little changes.

Masaya (Nicaragua): Seismic activity is unstable, with a phase of weak tremor (and a regional earthquake) visible on this morning’s seismogram.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): The earthquake swarm with weak volcanic tremor continues, associated with internal fluid movements and steam and ash venting, creating a plume observed rising 630 m above the volcano this morning.
The volcano-tectonic earthquakes , i.e. the likely location of new intruding magma, are located in northwest of Arenas crater, at an average depth of 7 km. The largest recorded quake was a magnitude 2.6 event at 22:43 (local time) last night, felt by officials of the Colombia National Parks in the area of Brisas.

Stromboli (Eolian Islands, Italy): (18 Apr) The lava flow continues to be alimented, but effusion rate has apparently dropped and only the upper portion of the flow seems currently active. The seismic signal shows strong eruption tremor and continuous rockfall signals.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): (18 Apr) The 11th paroxysm from the New SE crater occurred as expected today. As during the previous eruption, the build-up phase with increasing strombolian activity was relatively long. The peak phase itself when activity culminated in lava fountains was comparably short.

Miyake-shima (Izu Islands): A strong earthquake swarm, presumably caused by a magmatic intrusion, has started Wednesday at Miyake volcano in the Japanese Izu Islands.
On Wednesday alone, JMA recorded 136 earthquakes with magnitudes up to an earthquake of magnitude 5.6, which was widely felt in the region.

The quakes’ hypocenters are clustered in a NNW-SSW trending area about 10 km west of the island, at depths of 5-15 km.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): (18 Apr) A magnitude 4 earthquake occurred last night under the volcano, marking the so far largest event during the ongoing earthquake swarm, which in turn is likely a result of a shallow magma intrusion at depths of 5-9 km SW of Arenas crater. The earthquake was felt by many inhabitants of the area.  – Volcano Discovery

Tunguruahua, Ecuador (Photo credit: Wikipedia)Tolbachik (Kamchatka): KVER reports no change in the ongoing eruption of the volcano and ongoing high tremor values at levels similar to the past weeks. Recent field reports however suggest that the eruption continues its slowly declining trend and might actually be ending soon.
A group who visited the volcano on 29 April could not see lava flows or explosions at the active cone on the southern fissure. It was even possible to walk on the now cooling lava flows. However, weak incandescence and a MODIS hot spot remain visible. It is likely that the still elevated tremor signal indicates that the magma continues to be fed into lava tubes and emerges in places that are difficult to see or access. Although it would not come at all as a surprise if the eruption ends, after almost half a year, it is certainly still too early to announce its end right now.

Telica (Nicaragua): Seismic activity has declined and is now again near normal levels (which include frequent earthquakes typical for Telica volcano’s behavior).

Poas (Costa Rica): A small earthquake swarm occurred yesterday, probably caused by fluid movements bringing heat into the crater lake. Seismicity has calmed down today again.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): A shallow (5 km depth) earthquake of magnitude 3.8 occurred yesterday at 10:24 local time north of the Arenas crater and has been followed by an ongoing earthquake swarm.
The quake was felt in nearby areas including Manizales and Villamaria. Possibly, this could mean a new magmatic intrusion, but so far no reports of increased surface activity have become known.

Reventador (Ecuador): Activity remains moderate with frequent small explosions detected on seismic signals and strong degassing producing a plume that was observed yesterday rising 800 m.

Tungurahua (Ecuador): Ash emissions and explosions of moderate size have continued and generated a plume averaging 1-2 km in height above the crater. During the night, incandescence is visible at the summit. Some of the stronger explosions are accompanied by cannon-shot noises.

Mysterious earthquake swarm damages many villages in Galati, Eastern Romania

By

For a couple of weeks, an unusual earthquake swarm is going on in Eastern Romania, close to Moldovia border. Galati is the province where the earthquakes are happening.

The Galati area experienced dozens of earthquakes up to a Magnitude of 3.8 (last one just before writing this article). The quakes have an extremely shallow depth, have a relatively high shaking intensity and are causing a lot of damage in the villages near the epicenter areas (the epicenters have to be situated in an area of many kms and not in one location).

Some people are not waiting for more earthquakes and left their houses due do the damage, fearing a collapse if further quakes would strike.

Galati is a region with relatively low seismic activity and earthquake swarms like the current events are only known from the newspapers in other regions / countries (ER could trace some unconfirmed reports that a number of earthquakes occurred in March 1894!).

Screen Shot 2013-10-04 at 19.02.46

Residents and seismologists are very surprised and are trying to understand what is happening. Oil extraction and floodings where initially mentioned as  possible triggers but these reasons cannot explain why some other phenomenons like : a constant sound like “boiling water” (coming from the ground) and a strange water smell (like sulfur) is being noticed. Another reason the people are scared of are the big cracks appearing in the ground. There is no question that the seismic activity is caused by flood or oil exploitation,” said Mihnea Costoiu, Minister for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Development. Scientists  are saying that there was surely no big historic earthquake in the Galati area.

Although scientists are absolutely not sure about what will happening in the near future, they are trying to prevent panic in the affected villages. The affected population are upset about the lack of information from the authorities and the scientists (we at ER know that people are expecting answers from science which cannot be fulfilled at this level of scientific knowledge). As a reaction people tend to believe stupid rumors coming from so called people with special capacities while others have been praying to the Gods to end the swarm.

Romanian TV stations are following the events in the news and with a number of LIVE reports and discussion shows.

Strong Quake And Rapid Inflation In The Canary Islands: The El Hierro Volcano Ready To Blow

El Hierro underwater volcano erupting

By Chris Carrington

A 5.4 earthquake yesterday marked a change in the small, low level earthquake swarm that have been a feature of life in the Canary Islands for more than two years. The underwater volcano that appeared just off the coast of El Hierro two years ago has also changed in height, increasing more than  four inches in just a couple of days. This rapid inflation is increasing in pace, and harmonic tremors have been recorded, and they also are increasing as the day moves on. Both the rise in height and the increasing harmonic tremor indicates that magma is moving into the system and that the pressure is building within the volcano.

A vent opened near the village of La Restinga in 2011 and high Radon gas emissions in the area indicate that magma is once again on the move. The Radon, which is heavier than air poses a risk to people using basements and ground floor rooms in southern El Hierro.

La Palma, the Canary Island we hear most about lies some 100 miles from the epicentre of the 5.4 quake. La Palma is home to the Cumbre Vieja volcano. The west flank of the stratovolcano is unstable in comparison to the rest of the island and scientists have long feared a collapse that would throw so much debris into the sea a mega-tsunami would result. Simon day and Steven Ward wrote a paper describing the mechanism of  an explosion and collapse on La Palma that would lead to a mega-tsunami. You can read it here.

Some scientists are postulating the theory that some volcanic systems are linked deep underground, sometimes linking volcanoes hundreds of miles apart from each other.

Let’s hope The Cumbre Vieja and El Hierro aren’t linked, or we may be finding out if Day and Ward are right a lot sooner than we anticipated.

300-foot-tsunami-from-canary-islands-to-bring-destruction-to-the-atlantic-and-us-east-coast

By Ken Jorgustin

‘Hierro’, a volcano and island of the Canary Islands of Spain (named ‘El Hierro’), summits at 1500 meters (4,900 feet), and has gone through periods of highly active earthquake swarms – which leads some to believe that ‘something’ is about to happen.

UPDATE: Apparently one of the largest tremors in the region, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook all of the Canary Islands as it rocked just offshore of Hierro during DEC-27, 2013.

UPDATE: This is not meant to scare anyone, but to open one’s eyes to other possibilities than the ‘normal’.

Super Tsunami

  el-hierro-island-volcano

About El Hierro: After three successive eruptions, and consequent accumulations, the island emerged from the ocean as an imposing triangular pyramid volcano. El Hierro has the largest number of volcanoes in the Canaries with over 500 open sky cones, another 300 covered by the most recent outflows, and some 70 caves and volcanic galleries.

130,000 years ago (some reports say 50,000 years ago), seismic tremors produced massive landslides at El Hierro as a giant piece of the island split off and crashed down into the ocean, scattering along the seafloor. The submarine landslide, which consisted of approximately 300 cubic kilometers of earth, resulted in the creation of the huge amphitheater of the El Golfo valley, and more importantly caused a super tsunami that most likely rose over 100 meters high, 300 feet, and probably reached as far away as the American coast.

Trying to imagine a 300 foot tall tsunami is nearly unimaginable. Knowing the devastation that was caused by the tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan which themselves reached heights ranging between 20 and 50 feet, and the devastation that followed…

The devastation would be so extreme, so severe, so dire, that we assume that it would never happen in our lifetime — because it has never happened to us before.

The reality is that the odds of such an occurrence is low. However we cannot escape the fact that sometimes the seemingly random behavior of the geophysical world that we live in — will occasionally unleash hell.

‘If’ Hierro were to shake itself to the point where another huge chunk of the island plunged into the sea, the potential super tsunami would reach European shorelines in an hour or a few, while the United States east coast would probably be hit in about 6 hours time.

Knowing that the March-2011 major tsunami that tragically hit Japan also traveled 4,000 miles the other direction across the Pacific to produce an approximate 3 foot tsunami on some areas of the United States west coast, the approximate ratio was 10:1 as the wave finally reached the United States coastline.

There are many factors that are at work to determine tsunami height, and this is highly over-simplifying the formula — but the point is that if a Hierro submarine landslide and subsequent tsunami hit the United States east coast (which is 3,000 miles from the Canary Islands), the tsunami height could potentially be 30 to 40 feet – while some suggest much higher depending on the terrain leading up to the shoreline.

A tsunami like this would completely cover most of Long Island New York, Cape Cod Massachusetts, much of New York City, Boston, and countless other cities and towns up and down the highly populated east coast harboring millions upon millions of people. How about the state of Florida which is only feet about sea level… Unthinkable.

How Far Inland Would a 300-Foot Tsunami Go?

Why mention this at all, and what can we do about it anyway?

It’s good to simply be aware of the possibilities, which may lead to further preparedness by some who’ve never thought of it before. We’re all about preparedness here, and while tempering the doom and gloom — at the same time we are aware of what is currently happening in the world while also measuring against the odds. Given the the tremors and swarms that sometimes occur at Hierro, and although the odds are low, who’s to say more of the island won’t slump into the sea one day and produce a worst-case tsunami scenario?

UPDATE: After receiving email from a disgruntled reader who thought this was fear-mongering and who believes that there’s little chance of a wave higher than 1-foot hitting the east coast (which would be a hopeful outcome if true), here are a few links that dispute the theories of super or mega-tsunamis. http://www.lapalma-tsunami.com/tsunami.html http://www.drgeorgepc.com/TsunamiMegaEvaluation.html

Swarm Of California Earthquakes Continues A Series Of Unusual Events That Began In Late September

City Skyline - Public Domain

By Michael Snyder – End Of The American Dream

First it was wildfires, then it was unprecedented flooding, and now it is earthquakes.  In the past two weeks alone, more than 400 earthquakes have shaken San Ramon – a small city that sits approximately 45 miles east of San Francisco.  Never before have so many earthquakes been recorded in that area in such a short span of time.  Standing alone, that earthquake swarm may not mean that much.  But when you stand back and look at all of the unusual events that have been happening since late September, a very disturbing picture begins to emerge.

But first, let’s talk about this earthquake swarm.  All over the planet, seismic activity seems to be increasing.  According to Volcano Discovery, dozens of volcanoes around the world have recently erupted, and Afghanistan was just hit by a massive 7.5-magnitude quake.  It was one of the worst earthquakes that Afghanistan has ever seen, and it is going to take months to deal with all of the damage.  So that is why it is so alarming that right now there is record breaking earthquake activity just outside of San Francisco

San Ramon, California, appears to have broken a new earthquake record over the last two weeks: A total of 408 small quakes have shaken the East Bay city, almost four times the record set in 2003 in half the amount of time.

“I’ve not felt so many tremors in decades,” Mark Stone said outside a San Ramon Starbucks on Tuesday morning. “My dog, Gimmel, she’s the first one to know a couple of seconds before.”

And his dog has been extra alert lately.

The state of California has been seeing a lot of disasters lately.  In late September, tremendous wildfires in the state were making headlines all over the planet.  In fact, Barack Obama formally declared the Valley Fire to be a “major disaster”, and federal funding was released to help fight it.  The following is from an NBC News article that was posted on September 23rd
